Iiro Tarkki, who spent the 2011-2012 season with the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL, has signed with Salavat Yulaev Ufa of the KHL.
On May 6, 2011, Tarkki signed a one-year entry-level contract with the Anaheim Ducks.
Tarkki made his NHL debut for the Ducks on January 8, 2012, against the Columbus Blue Jackets, after primary goaltender Jonas Hiller was injured late in the first period. He led the Ducks to a 7–4 victory and racked up his first career NHL win.
Iiro is the younger brother of goaltender Tuomas Tarkki.
Tarkki uses his big frame well to challenge shooters and cut down angles. He picks his spots well in going into his butterfly, and is fairly quick getting back up.
Meanwhile, finnish goalie Joni Ortio will play for IFK Helsinki of the Sm-liiga on loan from the Calgary Flames.
Ortio has good reflexes, rebound control and quick lateral movement while playing with great composure and poise under pressure. The young netminder can at times show flashes of brilliance and has the mental strength to excel on breakaways or shootouts. He will have to continue improving his overall strength while adjusting to the North American style of play at the professional level and learn to play a more aggressive style against the shooter.
