One of the top soon to be UFA’s this summer is now off the market.

The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that they had given goaltender Ray Emery a one year extension, worth $1.15 mil.

Emery, 29, has compiled a 15-9-4 record and 2.81 goals-against-average in 34 appearances for the Blackhawks this year, his first season in Chicago. He has posted a 10-0-3 record and 2.15 GAA in 16 appearances at the United Center. The Cayuga, Ontario, native has also posted 20 wins in 36 career appearances in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, which includes backstopping the Senators to the 2007 Stanley Cup Final.

Scouting Report

The Good: This guy just loves to win. He has won 103 out of the 188 games he has played in his career, including 13 on route to a Stanley Cup final loss in 2006-2007.  He has good size for the goaltending position (Ht: 6-2 Wt: 196), and uses this size to an advantage on one on ones.  He also possesses the ability to steal victories by himself, a big reason why the team made it far in 2007. He Is  very athletic for a netminder, which helps him in recovery after letting out a rebound. He Can be very good at following the puck in scrambles in front of the net. Due to his size, he is good at seeing the puck shot through traffic, and is often able to get a pad or shoulder on shots from the point. He has the ability to be a solid starting goalie for many NHL teams.

The Bad: Off-ice and behavioral issues have hurt him, as have serious injuries. As seen at all levels, he can get too emotional at times, and subsequently lose focus of the task at hand. He will often will give up long rebounds on low shots, when he makes the save with his pads, mostly straight out into the slot. His glove hand has gotten slightly worse the last few season, most likely due to an injured wrist. He also makes mistakes playing the puck, also due to a broken wrist. He also occasionally  over commits on a play, especially on passes across ice, or 2 on 1′s toward the shooter.
