The Good: An accomplished goalkeeper at lower levels, MacD has the ability to step up at the highest level and perform solidly in short stints. He plays better when facing more shots. During his stint with the Detroit Red Wings in 2012, MacDonald went on a great tear, forcing Detroit to place Ty Conklin on waivers. The Red Wings have complete confidence that Joey MacDonald will continue to play at this level, and could allow the Red Wings to sit NHL All-Star goaltender Jimmy Howard on the bench. Strong positionally, “big Mac” has put up decent numbers in a backup role, and has always been a cheap, reliable option of team’s looking for goaltending. In stretches, he can be a big contributor to any team.

The Bad: MacDonald doesn’t play with enough consistency to be considered NHL starting goaltender material. He can at times look a little too small in his crease, since he doesn’t have ideal NHL size for a goalie (6’0, 197 LBS). Don’t expect him to be in the NHL for too long.
