Roberto Luongo

Posted: February 8, 2012 by Steven Ellis in Vancouver Canucks

The Good: Roberto Luongo is one of the worlds most talented goaltenders. He has an awesome combination of size, quickness and supreme command of the butterfly style. Loui can steal games for his team, and when he’s on his game, he’s confident and square to shooters, and plays big in the net. Luongo has a great team in front of him, but it’s not like he’s along for the ride. Roberto was easily one of the top goaltenders last season, and was a big reason why the Canucks did so good. He has experience in big game situations, winning the 2010 Olympic Gold Medal, where he was great, and the 2011 Stanley Cup finals, where he lost in game 7 to the Boston Bruins. His ability to make diving saves look routine is a big reason he is so good.

The Bad: While he is an elite goaltender, he does have his own struggles. When he’s off his game, he tends to flop around a lot, including a bad habit of going down on his belly. He needs to avoid occasional lapses in concentration and isn’t a very good puck-handler. He can be beaten high on his glove hand quite easily. Mentally, he can let things get to him, and it seems to be a recurring problem for Luongo. He did struggle during the playoffs last season, and wasn’t able to  save the team when the defense started to get battered. Oh ya, he does have Cory Schneider behind him, who is very capable of being the starter. Luongo’s long cold streaks give Schneider enough chances to succeed, but when you have somebody like Luongo taking up a big portion of your salary, you need your goalie to produce for you.
