Jason LaBarbera

Posted: January 20, 2012 by Steven Ellis in Phoenix Coyotes

The Good:  Jason has tremendous size for the goaltending position, so he fills up most of the net. He is capable of making spectacular saves from time to time, and is also a great team-first guy. Labarbera has had a ton of success in the AHL, so he can either be used as an NHL backup or AHL starter. The journeyman backup boasts impressive size as his greatest strength. He was OK in 17 games last season, going 7-6-3 with a .909 save percentage and 3.26 GAA. It’s hard to imagine “The Barber” being a starter for the Coyotes, but he could be a reasonably decent backup for two more seasons. If Mike Smith goes down with an injury, Labarbera can provide short-term success as the Coyotes starter.

The Bad:  Consistency has always eluded him at the National Hockey League level. He has questionable lateral mobility, which hurts his overall effectiveness. His minor level success has yet to transfer to the NHL.
