The Good: Smith has a huge frame, which helps him cover up most of the net. The good news for Phoenix fans is that he doesn’t usually hurt himself, or his team, by letting in soft goals.  He handles the puck very well and helps his defense clear the zone quickly (puck handling is his best attribute). Smith never was able to prove himself in Dallas or Tampa, so signing with Phoenix was a great desicison. He now has a chance to show he can be a number one goalie in the National Hockey League, and so far he has proven himself well with a weak team. With Sean Burke as a goalie coach, he has a great mentor to help improve his game.  He gained an infinite amount of wisdom last season in Tampa Bay and received excellent guidance from goaltending coach Frantz Jean. Smith proved last playoffs that he was capable of being a starter for stretches.

The Bad:  Durability is still a big issue for Smith, especially if used too frequently. He could stand to improve his overall focus in the crease area. He is still somewhat raw and needs to improve his coordination and flexibility. He doesn’t own enough puck-stopping ability to be considered a long time starter in the NHL.
