Pekka Rinne

Posted: January 15, 2012 by Steven Ellis in Nashville Predators

The Good: Rinne is a big goalie that covers the net well, thanks to uncanny flexibility and lightning-fast reflexes. He also uses his athletic ability to make tough saves after he gets out of position. He never quits on a play, and can be spectacular when he has to be, which is often due to the Predators weak offense. He always works hard at constantly improving his game.  Predator fans can’t count the number of times he bailed them out during the regular season, taking over a game in the third period, or making the big save when it counted. Rinne was a Vezina Canadiate last season, and could easily be one this year. It took a while, but Rinne is one of the best goaltenders in the NHL. Preds goalie coach has worked with some very strong goalies, such as Chris Mason, Tomas Vokoun, Dan Ellis and Anders Lindback, so Rinne is in good hands. 40+ wins for Rinne sounds achievable.

The Bad: One deficiency in Rinne’s game is that his concentration can go awry resulting in the odd very soft goal, but lucky for Nashville fans this isn’t often.  He can wear down if overworked and make mistakes, so he needs to be rested from time to time at the NHL level. Rinne is on quite weak offense team, so most nights its up to Rinne, Shea Weber and Ryan Suter to pull the load.
