Cam Ward

Posted: January 12, 2012 by Steven Ellis in Carolina Hurricanes

The Good: Ward, on his game, is one of the best goalies in the league. He’s shown that during three stretches of his career: during the 05-06 Playoffs when he won the Conn Smythe, at the very beginning of the 07-08 season when he was in the Top 5 in every goalie statistic in the league, and during the last 20 or so games of the season.  Cam has an ideal body for the goaltending position and an exemplary attitude. He loves the pressure of tending goal in big games, such as the Stanley Cup finals in 2006. In the two playoffs he has taken apart of during his short career, he has won a total of 6 series, including a cup in 06. He is as cool as a cucumber when facing a ton of rubber,  has excellent fundamentals and good tools such as an excellent catching hand.

The Bad: One of his biggest weaknesses is the poke check. He always tries and it it fails 99% of the time. He’s not a very good breakaway goalie and struggle to play the puck because his puckhandling is subpar. He seems to get really clumsy when the Canes are dominating and he’s not seeing many shots. He faces the burden of having to live up to huge expectations after early success. If Ward wants to continue to do well in this league, he must continue to strive for consistency and avoid complacency.
