Miikka Kiprusoff

Posted: January 11, 2012 by Steven Ellis in Calgary Flames

The Good: He is never out of a play, and is one of the most competitive ‘keepers in the league.  Kipper isn’t easily rattled and is able to bounce back from a bad goal.  He’s a great team player and everyone on the Flames love him on the ice and in the change room. A team that has struggled in the past, Kiprusoff has been able to shine as an excellent starting goaltender and workhorse.  He won the Vezina Trophy (Goaltender of the Year), William M. Jennings Trophy (Lowest goals-against) and was named to the First All-Star Team all in the same year, 2005-2006. He also led his team to an unexpected playoff run in 2003-2004, after being aqcuired for a second round draft pick. He played in his first NHL All-Star Game in 2007 and is the Flames franchise record holder in shutouts.

The Bad: While he has proven capable of handling heavy workloads, he isn’t as consistent when not given enough rest during the regular season. He usually plays around 70 games a year, so this can be a problem. Kipper has yet to win a playoff series since 2004, and hasn’t made the playoffs in 2 years, so his recent big game experience is limited.
